The return of the Cobbler

At a time when ideas, ideologies, rules, rights, points of view (referred to as ‘things’ from this point onwards) seem so unstable and as easy to overturn or overrule as ordering a new pair of those fancy boots on one of the endless shopping platforms, I was wondering where 2017 is taking us.

What a senseless paragraph.  I almost deleted it, but let’s see where it takes us…

Truth is, I have been feeling like the world around us has turned a bit senseless, and every morning is open to another ‘what happened now?’ moment. A bit demoralizing, right? Not so.

Think of it this way; There is a moment in time when politics and its big egos take over, and we, as a ‘smart’ species, would like to think that our democratic system would allow us to choose wisely and that our opinion and choice is the right one and therefore should prevail. However, changes have happened, and decisions were made, which a lot of us do not agree with. This does not mean that we need to be all doom and gloom. Let us create our own communities, and rules. Let us live our lives the way we want our lives to be lived and let us treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.

It is all too easy to think that we have no power as we are too small or too insignificant to make a difference. But everything is made of small things; atoms are the starting point of elements; a seed is the starting point of a tree; you are the starting point of positive change in your life and your community’s life.

So today, after following the price drop on a pair of boots I have been pining for (and for once they even had my size), I decided to do something a bit different. I picked up last years’ boots and walked to my local cobbler, a lovely old man (with probably the most beautiful smile one could ask for on a Saturday morning) and asked him to repair them. Tomorrow, instead of going to the supermarket because it is easy, I will go to the market and meet some of the people who spend hours taking care of their crops to get them to us. And in May, together, we will be launching an international business which hopefully will make a whole new movement come together and grow together. Our community starts from where we are, and it is up to us to decide how big we want it to be, regardless of who is trying to pull the strings of this planet.
