A few weeks ago we celebrated the birth of Sir Nicholas Winton, the man behind what is known as the Czech Kindertransport. That celebration truly touched me and it made me think of what our world and what humanity has already been through. It made me think of what it means to be human, and while Sir Nicholas rescued children and gave them a golden ticket to life, there are many other fights happening right now which require us to find that same human trait – that trait which I believe is common in all of us, and which we can find if we look hard enough. It is a deeply rooted goodness, which is waiting to be discovered and used.
What Sir Nicholas showed is that an individual can indeed make a difference, despite whatever public thoughts might be, the risks which might be faced or the difficulties which might challenge reaching the end goal. I watched the last interview he gave, and watched him smile and my heart automatically warmed when I thought of all the children who are now smiling thanks to him. To me, he is the epitome of ‘where there is a will, there is a way.’
Humanity is facing endless challenges today, and one of the scariest challenges is the greed for power regardless of its side effect; self-destruction. But there also seems to be a new movement growing, particularly among the millennials. For those millennials, heart matters, community matters, finding that goodness, matters and above all, the greed for power is turning into the greed to find meaning.
Our battle at earthikes is to protect the environment, protect culture and smaller communities while offering a route to our growing community to trek sustainably around the world and find their own meaning, hopefully while helping on one of our projects. We are moving slowly, focusing on getting each step right, but we do hope that when we get there in 2017, we will be able to have a community of individuals who will be making a difference, and we hope to have you by our side. And if you ever thought that an individual person could not make a difference…think again.
